LIZ'S CLASSROOM

posted Tuesday, 5 July 2005

I teach a self-contained classroom, which means that I have to engage 5th grade students in a wide variety of academic subjects and make sure that they are all meeting academic standards.  To lead a classroom of 30+ students for a period of 9 months requires much from a teacher:  creativity, energy, sense of humor, motivation, inspiration, patience, and other enduring qualities.  Strongly, I believe that running a well-maintained classroom takes much support and good camaraderie between teacher colleagues.  (That's why I joined PINOY TEACHERS NETWORK!  I simply can't do it all on my own.)

Being an educator would be such an easy job if all the students that entered into my classroom are "clones" of same personalities, skills and needs.  However, in reality that is not the case.  Many of the ELD (English Language Development) and Special Ed students that I lead are very willing to work hard.  Without a doubt, we have ourselves a great time!  Now that it's summer vacation again, it's nice to look back after the 180-day school calendar.  To see a lot of growth and positive changes occur within these students gives me a "natual high" feeling.  What an accomplishment it is to know that they close their elementary school years with good learning, and enter their middle school years feeling well-accomplished!
