Indeed a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

posted Sunday, 25 December 2005

To all fellow Filipino teachers from around the world,

Merry Christmas! Indeed it’s a merry, Merry Christmas for our Filipino athletes. For the first time in more than two decades, the Philippines won the overall championship in the currently concluded 23rd SEAGAMES held in several cities in the Philippines from November 27 to December 5, 2005 I feel sad that not much have been said about it in our Pinoy teachers network so I would like to contribute this article, I hope you can share it to other Filipino teachers.

Filipinos from all walks of life trooped to the venues or watched in their television sets and cheered for our countrymen in the week long sporting event. The SEAGAMES fever hit Manila and other key cities in the Philippines faster than any virus on the web. It’s a pity that the Prime Minister of Thailand used it to malign the event with their baseless accusations of cheating. It’s just amazing how our athletes have performed, with our athletes never say die attitude, their brave hearts carried them to victory, with a runaway 113 gold medals, in various events, outclassing 10 other countries . SEAGAMES Opening day Parade

I’m glad that me and my students were witnesses to this very momentous event and we would like to share this occasion to our fellow countrymen abroad. It made us really proud of being Filipinos. Please continue supporting our athletes. Especially in the less popular sports. We sweep all the 6 gold medals at stake in rowing, why? Most of our athletes in this event are real fishermen! Why did we also win in the women’s diving competition? The girl used to dive for coins thrown by passengers on board inter-island ships! Indeed they deserved every gold medal they have won. They won because they have trained hard for it in spite of their limited resources. My students Christmas wish is “if only the opposition and the administration would stop fighting and instead of destroying our country, they should join hand-in-hand in helping our athletes in their training as well as solving our economy.

Is this Sydney?, Is this New York?. Nope! It’s the Quirino Grandstand, Luneta during the closing ceremonies of the 23rd SEAGAMES!

We were worried about our PAASCU accreditation last week because almost our entire English department went abroad this year. Luckily our fresh graduate teachers delivered well. One of the questions asked by the accreditors to our students was: “If you were given 1 million to spend on a special project in school, in what specific project would you spend it?” Some of the students said more basketball courts, more air-conditioned laboratories and then one student stood up and said. “I would like to give the 1 million to all of my teachers so that they will no longer leave us to work abroad!” That broke the accreditors hearts as well as ours.

Mabuhay ang lahat ng mga Pilipinong guro at manlalaro sa buong mundo! Muli, Maligayang Pasko sa inyong lahat!

Yours truly,
