Tanghalang Pilipino ng DC was founded by a group of friends who were Anti Marcos activists. When Marcos was brought down by the EDSA Revolution…we found a lot of free time on our hands and since all of us had growing children and we all wanted to instill in our kids the pride of being Filipino and wanting them to grow up singing “Star Spangled Banner”and “Lupang Hinirang” with equal fervor. I for one wanted my children to grow up not only knowing how to sing Tagalog songs, eat adobo and sinigang and saying that they are proud to be Filipino, but I wanted them to know and feel it their hearts what it is to be Filipino. We wanted them to be able to talk to the wider community about their ethnicity without any false pretenses, that they say they can sing tagalong songs, they will actually know what those songs mean, that they can dance tinikling but would also know how tinikling came about.
We also wanted them to feel part of an extended family, where there will be ates, kuyas, titas, titos, lolos and lolas..hence TP membership is a family thing. We wanted them to live the bayanihan spirit…
